The forecast is model output
Every number in BommieSurf comes from a numerical weather and wave model predicting the future. Models are wrong regularly and sometimes badly, and conditions at the coast can differ materially from any forecast — including this one, including on the day, including by a lot.
The wave models work on grids roughly 9 to 28 kilometres across. They cannot see a sandbar, a rip, a reef, a rock, a current, a closeout, other people in the water, marine life, or the state you are in that morning. Tide predictions are not for navigation.
BommieSurf is a tool to help forecast surf conditions only. It is not for navigation, nautical or marine safety use, or any safety-critical purpose.
A score is your own preferences, played back
The score on an hour is that hour measured against the tide, swell and wind you saved for that break. It is not a statement about safety, and it is not a judgement of quality that anyone else would agree with. Two people can save the same beach and get different scores for the same hour, which is the point of the app.
So a 9 does not mean a break is safe, and a 1 does not mean it is dangerous. It means the conditions match, or do not match, what you told us works.
Surfing is dangerous
You surf at your own risk. You are responsible for assessing the conditions in front of you, for knowing your own ability, and for deciding whether to enter the water — and none of those three is something an app can do for you.
To the extent permitted by law, we accept no liability for any decision you make on the basis of anything shown in this app.
